Dark Patterns

Overview

A very challenging project which I led from start to finish. I had the opportunity to work with key stakeholders to redesign the cookie modal for enhanced transparency and user empowerment.

Hands-on work included exhaustive competitor analysis, heuristic evaluations, and a comprehensive UX/UI audit. The goal was to eliminate deceptive design techniques, known as dark patterns, and propose fair patterns that respect user autonomy.

The project encompassed UI concepts, user testing, problem and scope definition, interaction design, and a detailed implementation strategy.

Process

I took on the challenge of transforming a cookie modal that utilized deceptive design techniques, known as dark patterns, which undermined user autonomy and manipulated their choices. My goal was to identify these dark patterns and propose fair patterns that empower users.

Competitor Analysis

I conducted an exhaustive analysis of other players who excel in providing an exceptional experience with their cookie modal features. This competitive analysis helped identify best practices and informed the direction of my design proposal.

Heuristic Evaluation and UX/UI Audit

Performing a heuristic evaluation and a UX/UI audit of the existing cookie modal allowed me to detect strong points, areas for improvement, and critical weaknesses. This foundational work was essential for developing a fair and user-centric design.

Findings:
- Strengths: Clear branding and visibility.
- Areas for Improvement: Transparency of choices and ease of understanding.
- Weaknesses: Manipulative default settings and misleading options.

Visual Identity and User Empowerment

The final design focused on clear communication, user control, and transparency, ensuring that the cookie modal aligns with the brand’s visual identity while empowering users to make informed choices.
